CLASSES WE OFFER
PREPARATION FOR DANCE PROGRAM
We have a specialised Preparation for Dance program developed in house by our Principal with 30 years of teaching experience. This program has proved to produce fantastic results. As young as 3 and 4 year old students of the program are able to perform independently, without older students guiding them or dancing in front of them on stage. Continuing on from Mommy & Me class, students begin to learn independently and are introduced to the idea of working in a group under the guidance of a teacher. The playful approach of this 3 year program continues to develop many skills such as coordination, motor skills, balance, musicality, rhythm, concentration and following instruction. After completion of this program, students are very well prepared for and confident to start ballet or any other style of dance. Students are able to partake in performances from Beginners Grade.
Mommy & Me

And this is what this class is designed for - development of co-ordination, gross motor skills, creative movement, attention & memory. Classical ballet is the best foundation for every other style of dance and it is our specialty. We use world renown, authentic Vaganova method known to produce world's best ballet dancers. Classical ballet students of Vaganova method are characterised by a poetic spirituality, grace, a wealth of expressive plastic nuances, exceptional harmonious plasticity of movement and the responsive suppleness. At the same time dancers of Vaganova teaching show the “iron” aplomb of the body, and the noble and natural placement of the head on top of general excellence of technical and performing skills. Practicing ballet, in any method, has many advantages, but learning ballet using Vaganova method has proven to provide the following additional benefits:
Develops logical thinking, discipline, concentration and memory
Develops excellent coordination skills
Proven to significantly impact on correction and improvement of body shape and figure
Helps to correct conditions such curved spine and other spinal problems, slouched back, crooked legs, flat feet, and many other conditions
Facilitates gracious movement of the body and graceful walk

A whole week of all day long dancing. what could possibly be better?
Enrolled dance students have an opportunity for full time advanced training experience at our Summer & Winter Schools. Summer school is usually held at the end of January, prior to commencement of the official study year. Winter school is held during the June/July school holidays and is designed for students who wish to undertake official examinations or for those who wish to simply keep on dancing during school holidays. Summer & Winter Schools give students the opportunity for advanced learning and enhancement of skills and technique.
Progress through clear study program and get qualified, expert feedback along the way!
Students can either undergo formal official examinations with an external examiner, or, less formal internal examinations taken by a panel of our own teachers with the rest of the group. We do however encourage our students to undertake annual official examinations. By doing so, it helps students build confidence in their dance practice and reassurance for their progress and achievement. Nonetheless, both get quality feedback on their progress and areas for improvement.
We engage highly qualified and experienced external dance professionals for our official examinations from local pool of senior experts. Students are able to receive a certificate upon completion of each grade’s examination passed and a Certificate of Completion upon successfully passing the whole of the study program. Examination program for classical ballet is customised to combine professional Russian ballet schools’ program (Vaganova method) and the overall standards of methods most common in Australia.
OUR BALLET EXAMINERS
the exceptional local professionals that have examined our students in the past
Leslie was the first examiner at our studio. He finished his dance training at the Royal Ballet School London and later joined the Royal Ballet Company where he became a leading soloist. In 1974 Leslie joined Queensland Ballet as Dancer, Choreographer and Rehearsal Director and later became Assistant to the Artistic Director. After retiring from the professional Theatre, Leslie worked with Ballet Theatre of Queensland, as performer, choreographer and Artistic Director (1988/93). Leslie was also an Assistant Artistic Director of Brisbane City Youth Ballet. Leslie said "Dancing and teaching dancing is, and always has been, the love of my life." We are honoured to have had such an excellent professional and wonderful person who was always happy to give his time and knowledge to ensure that the next generation of dancers could experience the joy of dance.
Janine is founder and Artistic Director of Brisbane City Youth Ballet (BCYB). After studying all facets of dance from a very young age, Janine received full teaching qualifications in ballet, modern and tap dance as well as graduating from University with a Bachelor of Education. Commencing teaching with the Department of Education, Janine opened her own dance school in 1994 quickly developing a reputation as a leading school in classical ballet with excellent teaching. In 2008 Janine decided to focus solely on developing BCYB, which is her love and life passion as she dedicates her time to BCYB and working with elite students who require specialised training to reach their goal of becoming professional ballet dancers through engagement in full scale ballet productions.
Jan is a Life Member, and a Grades and Major Examiner for A.D.A., formerly known as the Federal Association of Teachers of Dancing. Former Principal of her own studio in Rockhampton for 25 years, Jan now has over 50 years of teaching experience. Over the years, she has adjudicated at festivals and Eisteddfods throughout Australia. Jan has also been committed to the Brisbane City Youth Ballet since its inception and works as Rehearsal and Class Teacher. Past students of Ms Moore are presently performing in companies both overseas and in Australia, most notably Leanne Benjamin, who was Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet. Jan Moore has been our examiner for a number of years and continues to be to this day and we are honoured to have such an expert in the field of ballet and dance on board.
We never pass an opportunity to get our dancers in front of a crowd on a big shiny stage!
Our dancers are presented with many opportunities to take part in various performances throughout the year. All of our students are engaged in our annual concert showcasing their talent, progress and achievements over the year. We are also frequently invited to perform at various local events, cultural celebrations, festivals and other performance avenues. We often compete at local Eisteddfods and other competitions in group or solo/duo nominations. Many of our students have been and are currently engaged in professional children’s ballet theatres, such as Brisbane City Youth Ballet and Ballet Theatre of Queensland. We encourage our students to attend various auditions for participation in ballet theatre productions and other dance avenues and offer our students the service of preparing and coaching for a successful audition.
